Gutters on both sides
Hello,
I'd really like to use Slammer, but it misses one feature that I can't cope without (perhaps it's already there and I'm just being dense!).
I would love there to be a tick-box somewhere so that the gutter is on both sides of a column. For example, if I'm doing a 960 grid layout with 12 columns then I like the columns to be 60px wide with a 10px gutter on the left and on the right of the column (totalling 80px), as opposed to just the left of the column. When there are two columns next to each other this would mean there is a 20px gutter between each (the 10px of the right from one and the 10px of the left from the other).
You've created templates that seem to replicate this functionality, but it can be a little counter-intuitive to do one's self.
Thanks!
Mark

Inappropriate?Mark,
How is this different from just specifying 60px for the section size and 20px for the gutter size width the width set to 980px?

Here is the Slammer template for the same:

You can download it and double click on it to load it in Slammer.
Thanks
Lakshmi.

Inappropriate? It's not different. But doing it like this hadn't occurred to me – and it might not occur to a lot of people – it's not immediately obvious. When doing a 960 grid you would expect to be able to do a 960 width with columns that have gutters on both sides. I imagine that's a pretty standard thing.
(Actually, it doesn't quite replicate the same functionality anyway. I normally do a 1000px grid with an extra 20px on the far left and far right (for border shadows and the like) and then a 960 grid within that. Again, it is possible to replicate this using multiple layers, but you have to think about it for a while.)
The point is: using gutters on both sides is very common within grid systems I would have thought. As such it would be great if it was an option, so that a user doesn't have to work out a clever way of replicating the functionality using different widths and multiple layers. It would also mean that the "Number of sections" field would say "12", thus reflecting what I want, and not "12.5" (and allow a user to enter 12, or 16, or whatever without having to do the maths themselves).
As you've demonstrated, it's perfectly possible to do already. As I think I've demonstrated, it could be a lot easier to do.
Great product though. Just a suggestion. And now I know how to do a 960 grid I'll purchase a copy.
Thanks again,
Mark

Inappropriate?Mark,
Thanks so much for the mockup and the thoughtful response. I see your point. There are a few issues with the way the uniform grids are laid out - I'm fixing them in the next release.
1. The uniform grids draw the gutter first and column next.
2. The number of columns calculation is incorrect - it assumes equal number of gutters and sections whereas number of gutters should be one less than the number of columns.
The above two issues cause problems with the usual 960gs as seen here: http://960.gs/demo.html
The layout should be defined in this manner:
Left Margin | col1 | gut1 | col2 | gut2 | ... | col12 | Right Margin.
The way slammer does uniform grids this is only possible by switching the gutter and section values. Here is the replication of the above 960.gs link using Slammer:

------------------------------------------------
Essentially this gives a grid with margins, columns and gutters. This however is different from your suggestion of having gutters on both sides of each column.
Do you think fixing the above problems would negate the need for gutters on both sides?
I'm looking up some of the resources to see the usage patterns. So far, in my limited exposure to grid systems in both print and web, I've always seen grids defined as:
Margin | Column1 | Gutter1 | .... | Gutter n-1 | Column n | Margin

Truly appreciate your feedback.

Inappropriate? Also, I definitely agree that these settings are less than obvious. I'm working on a solution to set up the entire grid in one place.

Inappropriate?I think looking at usage patterns is an excellent idea. It's quite possible I'm the only person in the world who thinks of it in terms of a gutter on each side!
Thanks again. Look forward to future improvements.

Inappropriate?I like this spec dialog box. It would be nice if the text input box would increment/decrement the values with the up/down arrow keys.

Inappropriate?I agree with you guys. This is the one area that really confuses me about slammer. It takes quite a lot of fiddling with to replicate the gutters on both sides thing, and when you are trying to quickly get some layouts working, with different grid options, it can get quite frustrating.
Quite often I have just given up as it really isn't that intuitive.
Something like the grid generation shown above would really do the trick - and if that feature was implemented, you would have my cash right now!

Inappropriate?Guys,
Sorry it has taken way too long. But a really nice update is on its way.
Thanks for your patience,
Lakshmi.
I’m thankful
